Founded in 1996 by Greg Slatner and S.A. Siddiqui in Gainesville, Florida, USA the initial purpose of Software For Free was to earn profits through the sales of banner advertising. The goal was to use the legal distribution of free
software to drive traffic to the site. Sadly, with
the burst in the "Dot.Com Bubble" and the death of banner advertising the owners and founders gave up that business
model.
This domain name is
now being used to provide support to Mac users and to drive traffic to other sites with less search engine friendly domain names. Expansion of the site
based on this goal is proceeding.
